Jake Mueser attended New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology, where he discovered an interest in tailored menswear. Jake began tailoring suits for himself and friends, creating a distinct but adaptable style that combined a love of modern fashion with a respect for traditional tailoring. By 2008, the most chic streets in New York were populated with people in J. Mueser suits, and the private client list soon outgrew the modest operation in Jake’s downtown loft.

In 2009 Jake, along with jeweler Ryan Matthew and bespoke denim tailor Simon Jacobs, opened Against Nature at 159 Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side. The shop, a decadent neo-Victorian boutique filled with suits, cufflinks, shirts, jeans, Jeffery West Shoes, a brace of stuffed albino peacocks, the occasional vervet monkey skull, and a seemingly endless supply of Hendrick’s Gin, is also home to the J. Mueser workshop and studio and is regularly the site of infamous parties.

In 2010 Jake opened J. Mueser Bespoke at 19 Christopher Street, an elegant and civilized boutique where the focus is on bespoke suits, shirts, and accessories, and the customer is always welcome to drop in for a glass of Balvenie Scotch and a spot of intelligent conversation. The client list continues to expand, and in recent years J. Mueser has made clothing for Hollywood films, designed member items for a host of exclusive clubs and societies, and collaborated with top designers on runway collections.
